On Friday, Geral Whitney, 69, from Harrison, was sentenced to 20 to 30 years in prison by Judge Paul Stutesman in the 45th Circuit Court in St. Joseph County. This sentencing follows his conviction for sexually assaulting a relative two decades ago. The announcement was made by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Whitney faced charges from a St. Joseph County jury in May and was found guilty of one count of First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and two counts of Second-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.

"This significant sentence sends a clear message that no matter how much time has passed, justice is possible for sexual assault survivors," stated Nessel. "My office will continue to work with courageous victims and local prosecutors to ensure cases like these are prioritized and offenders are held accountable."

The charges against Whitney were initially filed in 2023 following an investigation conducted by the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office and the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The prosecution was managed by the Department of Attorney General at the request of local prosecutors in 2024.
