Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced that the Department of Attorney General is managing prosecutorial duties in Lake County. This move follows the resignation of the Lake County Prosecuting Attorney in early June. The department began assisting with cases on June 9 after consultations with local officials and law enforcement.
Nessel emphasized the importance of public safety, stating, “Our top priority is public safety and the protection of crime victims.” She also noted that her office is equipped to ensure justice continues without delay or denial. However, she expressed concern over potential budget cuts that could impact their ability to respond to similar crises.
The Department of Attorney General has a history of assisting counties facing vacancies in their prosecutor's offices, including Houghton, Luce, and Ontonagon counties. The support will continue in Lake County until a new prosecuting attorney is appointed.
