The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has issued food safety reminders to assist residents in preparing for Independence Day celebrations. The department emphasizes the importance of hand hygiene, advising individuals to wash their hands thoroughly before and after cooking, as well as before eating. This practice helps prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.
MDARD also highlights the need to avoid cross-contamination by keeping raw meat separate from vegetables and using different cutting boards and utensils. It is recommended to clean grills before use and ensure that meats are cooked thoroughly by following instructions on food labels and using a food thermometer.
Fruits and vegetables should be washed completely to remove germs and dirt. MDARD advises placing prepared produce in the refrigerator or on ice immediately after cutting to maintain freshness.
Temperature control is crucial in preventing bacterial growth. Foods should be kept out of the temperature danger zone between 40°F and 140°F. For cold foods, ice packs and insulated containers are suggested, while heat sources like warming trays or slow cookers can keep hot foods at safe temperatures.
Leftovers should be divided into smaller portions, stored in shallow containers, and refrigerated promptly. MDARD recommends setting refrigerators at 40°F or below, and freezers at 0°F or below. To avoid consuming spoiled leftovers, it is advised to discard food after prolonged storage periods as noted in Safe Storage Times charts.
In cases of suspected foodborne illness, individuals are urged to seek medical attention immediately and contact their local health department for assistance.
