Charles Schumer, a 75-year-old resident of Freeland, Michigan, has been arraigned in the 70th District Court in Saginaw. The charges against him include one count of embezzlement of $100,000 or more by an agent and one count of embezzlement from a vulnerable adult, $100,000 or more. Each charge carries a potential 20-year prison sentence.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that Schumer allegedly embezzled over $200,000 from a relative's retirement assets while acting as her attorney-in-fact. It is also alleged that he made purchases with these funds that did not benefit the vulnerable adult.
"Too often, we see the assets of vulnerable adults unlawfully siphoned away when they move into a residential care setting," Nessel stated. "My department will continue to hold accountable those who abuse their authority to exploit others."
Schumer was arraigned before Judge A.T. Frank and was released on a personal recognizance bond. A date for his next court appearance has not been set.
The case is being handled by the Attorney General’s Health Care Fraud Division (HCFD), which is Michigan's federally certified Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The HCFD receives 75% of its funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under a grant award totaling $5,703,460 for fiscal year 2025. The remaining 25%, amounting to $1,901,152, is funded by the State of Michigan.
For all criminal proceedings, it should be noted that a criminal charge is merely an allegation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Booking photos are not provided by the Department.
