The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is inviting input from wine grape growers regarding the possible creation of a legislatively established Michigan wine grape commodity group. This initiative follows the submission of enough signatures by growers to consider forming such an organization. MDARD is now accepting nominations for a temporary advisory committee composed of industry members, which will guide the next steps in this process.
"MDARD is committed to maintaining a diverse food and agriculture industry within Michigan and highlighting unique agricultural opportunities," stated MDARD Director Tim Boring. "The potential establishment of a wine grape commodity group would support Michigan craft beverage producers and businesses to continue to grow their product, expand their knowledge and improve their economic impact."
In Michigan, Public Act 232 provides a framework for commodity growers to organize and decide on establishing a legislatively enacted commodity group. To initiate this process, either 200 signatures or 25 percent from growers are required, whichever is lower. These signatures must then be submitted to MDARD as per statutory requirements. Currently, MDARD oversees 15 legislatively established commodity boards.
Wine grape growers in Michigan, along with businesses involved in purchasing these grapes, are encouraged to submit their contact information for updates on the P.A. 232 process. This includes details about committees, public hearings, and referendums.
Growers can also use this form to nominate themselves for participation in the temporary advisory committee. The deadline for survey responses is June 11, 2025.
The temporary advisory committee's responsibilities include developing program recommendations that will be considered by fellow wine grape growers at upcoming public hearings. Should feedback from these hearings be favorable, a referendum date will be scheduled for qualified producers of the commodity. A successful referendum marks the final step toward enacting a wine grape P.A. 232 group.
