Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued a statement in response to the recent shootings targeting two Minnesota state legislators. In her statement, Nessel expressed deep sorrow for those impacted by the attacks on Senator John Hoffman and Representative Melissa Hortman.
"My heart breaks for all those affected by the politically motivated attacks and murders in Minnesota, and especially for the families of Senator John Hoffman and Representative Melissa Hortman," she stated. "This is a devastating attack on public servants, public service, and our shared values as Americans. We cannot tolerate political violence anywhere in this country and it must be met with the strongest, universal condemnation everywhere and every time."
Nessel emphasized that her office is maintaining contact with Michigan State Police and other authorities to gather information about the incident and evaluate any potential threats within Michigan. She reassured residents that there is no known emergent danger in Michigan linked to these shootings at present.
"Nonetheless, my office will be in contact with legislative and elected leaders as we navigate this heartbreaking news," she added. "The Department of Attorney General remains vigilant in these efforts today and stands ready to enforce the full might of state law to keep Michiganders safe—including our elected officials."
