Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, along with attorneys general from seven other states, has secured a court ruling against John Spiller, permanently barring him from the telecommunications industry. The judgment also requires Spiller to pay over $600,000 in costs and attorney's fees for violating a 2023 court order.
"Mr. Spiller owned and operated companies behind billions of intrusive and deceptive robocalls," Nessel stated. "I am proud to have worked alongside my colleagues to secure this judgment ensuring he can no longer harass Michiganders. I will continue using every tool at my disposal to hold bad actors accountable and protect consumers from illegal robocalls."
In March 2023, Nessel had obtained judgments shutting down a significant robocall operation involving Spiller and others. Despite being banned from making robocalls or engaging in telemarketing, Spiller continued his activities using alias names and new telecommunications companies.
The recent court order prohibits Spiller from starting any new telecommunications companies and bans him from collaborating with certain individuals involved in his past violations. Additionally, it prevents him from making deceptive representations using aliases in government filings.
Spiller's companies included Rising Eagle Capital Group LLC, Rising Eagle Capital Group–Cayman, JSquared Telecom LLC, among others.
The legal action was supported by the Attorneys General of Arkansas, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, and Texas.
