In celebration of Earth Day, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is sharing guidance with Michigan residents on enhancing their gardens and lawns while benefiting the environment.
"This Earth Day, MDARD invites all Michiganders to join us in protecting the natural resources that make our state a great place to live," said MDARD Director Tim Boring. "Small but meaningful actions like planting a variety of species and using pesticides and fertilizer responsibly can help ensure a more sustainable future for Michigan."
MDARD suggests regenerative practices to foster healthier soil and improve water retention. Homeowners and gardeners are encouraged to:
- Maximize biodiversity by planting a diverse range of species. This approach helps provide food and habitat for wildlife, attracts pollinators, and reduces pest issues without the heavy reliance on pesticides.
- Maintain living roots through the use of perennial plants. These plants can enhance soil health and reduce replanting efforts.
- Keep soil covered and undisturbed, using mulching materials to conserve moisture and decrease excessive tilling.
MDARD also advises careful usage of pesticides and fertilizers, highlighting the risks associated with improper applications. Recommendations include:
- Testing the soil to avoid excessive fertilizer application, which could harm plants and contaminate water resources.
- Reading labels carefully to adhere to specified application rates and safety protocols.
- Considering alternatives to pesticides by employing integrated pest management practices.
- Applying products only when dry to prevent runoff and water pollution.
- Practicing safe disposal by using resources like the MDARD's Clean Sweep website and local waste facilities for guidance.
