A kindergarten teacher in Kent County has been recognized with an Excellence in Education award by the Michigan Lottery. Mary Frey, who teaches at Kettle Lake Elementary within the Caledonia Community Schools, received the honor for her significant contributions to student success.
The Michigan Lottery launched the Excellence in Education awards in 2014 to honor outstanding educators across the state throughout the school year. The weekly award comes with a $2,000 cash prize. At the end of the school year, one weekly winner will be chosen as Educator of the Year and awarded an additional $10,000.
Mary Frey's dedication was praised by the Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli, who said: "Mary Frey’s dedication to each student, evident in her detailed care and personal investment to each individual in her classroom, is truly remarkable." Shkreli emphasized Frey's ability to inspire students and foster a positive atmosphere. Frey, in response, remarked on the rewarding nature of teaching young students and the formation of positive, lasting relationships.
The nomination for Frey came from a student's family who commended her personal energy and commitment to the welfare of students. They cited an example from the pandemic when Frey initiated a Valentine's Day card project for nursing staff, which expanded to the entire school's participation.
With 22 years of experience, including 15 in her current role, Frey has developed a reputation for her impact in education. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Michigan State University. Excellence in Education nominees are judged based on criteria such as excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness.
The news segment featuring Frey is scheduled to air this evening on local media partner stations.
