As Black History Month is observed, the partnership with the Michigan Black Business Alliance (MBBA) is being highlighted for its role in supporting small businesses throughout Michigan. This collaboration reflects a mutual dedication to aiding these enterprises beyond just this commemorative month.
The MBBA, which was previously known as the Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance, has broadened its influence across the state. This expansion was made possible by a recent $500,000 appropriation from the state legislature. The funds are being used to initiate programs in Lansing and Flint aimed at closing the racial wealth gap and providing crucial resources to Black-owned businesses.
One of MBBA’s notable initiatives is Capital Connect, which offers technical assistance, access to affordable capital, and networking opportunities for entrepreneurs. Their strong policy advocacy efforts have achieved progress in recognizing small businesses as key contributors to economic growth.
Charity Dean, President and CEO of MBBA, underscores the significance of deliberate action in their initiatives. "Our unique programs and bold policy advocacy have helped decision-makers begin to approach small businesses as essential drivers of economic development," Dean stated to BridgeDetroit.
This focused effort has resulted in growth not only for Black businesses within Metro Detroit but also statewide.
The partnership with MBBA is valued as it supports their mission towards creating an environment where all small businesses can succeed. The achievements of the Michigan Black Business Alliance continue to positively impact communities across Michigan.
