The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is set to commence the next phase of a significant infrastructure project in Sanilac County, involving an investment of $26.4 million. The project focuses on the reconstruction and enhancement of M-46.
This upcoming phase, part of a two-year initiative, includes resurfacing the section of M-46 stretching from Sandusky's eastern city limit to Carsonville's western village limit. Additionally, it involves replacing the M-46 bridge over the Black River. In 2024, efforts were concentrated on rebuilding M-46 within Sandusky, which included replacing storm sewers, upgrading traffic signals, curbs, sidewalks, and implementing safety improvements. These efforts also extended to improving M-19 in Sandusky.
The construction work is scheduled to start on Monday, February 17, 2025, with an anticipated completion date in October 2025. During this period, both directions of M-46 will be closed to traffic. A detour will redirect vehicles via Ruth Road to Forester Road and Maple Grove Road. Additionally, the carpool lot on M-46 east of Ruth Road will be unavailable for use during this time.
According to MDOT officials: "This work will provide drivers with a smoother, safer driving surface."
