The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will hold a public open house to discuss the upcoming reconstruction of a 7.8-mile section of US-31. The project, set for 2025 and 2026, spans from Sullivan Road in Green Lake Township, Grand Traverse County, to Reynolds Road in Inland Township, Benzie County. A roundabout is planned at the South Long Lake Road/J. Maddy Parkway intersection.

The open house is scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Blair Township Hall in Grawn, Michigan. MDOT invites community members, city representatives, local businesses, interested residents, and MDOT staff and contractors to attend.

"Attendees who require mobility, visual, hearing, written or other assistance for effective participation should contact Orlando Curry at 517-241-7462 or CurryO@Michigan.gov," MDOT advises. They recommend making requests at least five business days before the meeting.

The project aims to improve pavement conditions and enhance safety by adding center left-turn lanes, widened paved shoulders, and rumble strips. The construction schedule includes tree clearing and detour route improvements in spring-summer 2025; unsuitable soil excavation and replacement in fall 2025; rebuilding between Sullivan Road and west of J. Maddy Parkway/South Long Lake Road in spring-summer 2026; and rebuilding from west of J. Maddy Parkway/South Long Lake Road to Reynolds Road in summer-fall 2026.
