The Northern Michigan University (NMU) hockey team suffered a 4-0 defeat against the Michigan Tech Huskies in their second game of the weekend series. The Huskies secured the win with two goals in the first period, a short-handed goal at the end of the second, and an empty-netter in the third.
Despite NMU's strong penalty kill performance, successfully nullifying all five Husky power play opportunities, they were unable to capitalize on their own chances. The Huskies excelled on defense as well, going 4/4 on penalty kills and adding a short-handed goal to their tally.
Ten players from Michigan Tech contributed points during the game. Goals were scored by Morrell (game-winning goal), Matter, Koskipirtti (short-handed goal), and Jansson (empty net goal). Goalie Manzella achieved his third shutout in four starts by stopping all 22 shots from NMU.
Looking ahead, NMU will host Bowling Green Falcons next weekend.
During the match, NMU initially gained momentum when Diamond drew a penalty from Michigan Tech. However, despite sustained pressure during power plays, they failed to score. The Huskies took advantage of their opportunities when Works set up Morrell for a close-range shot that slipped past Ouellette.
The Wildcats' penalty kill units performed well throughout the game but struggled offensively. In one instance, Slipec had a chance for a one-timer play but was thwarted when his stick broke at a crucial moment.
Koskipirtti capitalized on a turnover during another Wildcat power play attempt and extended Michigan Tech's lead with a short-handed goal before heading into the final period. An additional opportunity arose for NMU early in the third period following Altrichter drawing another Husky penalty; however, attempts missed narrowly wide or were blocked by defenders.
