The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close the Michigan Avenue roundabout southeast of I-94 in Jackson for reconstruction starting Monday, September 29. The closure is part of a larger $162 million project to rebuild sections of I-94 and associated bridges in Jackson County.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer commented on the ongoing infrastructure efforts: "Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely. By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let's build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs."

The current work is part of Governor Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program. The program targets state highways and bridges that play an important role in both the state's economy and traffic flow. The strategy focuses on making improvements that extend infrastructure lifespan and enhance overall condition.

Construction is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 29, 2025. The roundabout closure is expected to last until 7 a.m. on Monday, October 13, with the entire project set for completion by November 2025.

During construction, eastbound I-94 drivers will be rerouted via Parma Road ramps while westbound traffic will use Concord Road and Parma Road ramps. Motorists should anticipate delays; detour signs will be posted throughout the area.

According to economic models used by MDOT for this project, approximately 1,960 jobs are expected to be supported directly or indirectly as a result of this investment.

MDOT states that these upgrades are intended to improve safety and mobility along I-94—a corridor considered important for both local travel needs and national trade routes.
