Hoving earns first team honors as Wildcats finish seventh at GLIAC Championships

The Northern Michigan University cross country team participated in the GLIAC Championships held in Big Rapids, Michigan. The event saw Gianna Hoving secure a spot on the All-GLIAC First Team with her performance, finishing in 10th place overall. Hoving completed the 6K race in 21:44.2, narrowly missing her personal best.

Reflecting on her strategy, Hoving stated, "I like starting off pretty slow and steady." She added that she motivates herself by thinking, "God is good and with me," and as she progressed through the race, she focused on catching competitors from Michigan Tech.

Following Hoving's lead for Northern Michigan was Dani VanLente who finished 31st with a time of 22:53.8. Skylar Grubb came in shortly after at 33rd place with a time of 22:55.3. Lamar Gordon also secured a top-40 finish by placing 38th at 23:02.1.

Other notable performances included Celia Wallace finishing in 45th place with a time of 23:20.9 and Beverly Harper coming in at 52nd place with a time of 23:31.3. Brooke Lemos, Sophia Potter, and Anya VanSweden also achieved top-70 finishes.

Overall, the Wildcats finished seventh out of eleven teams at the conference meet, scoring a total of 143 points. Grand Valley State claimed victory with just 23 points while Wayne State and Parkside followed behind.

Next up for Northern Michigan is participation in the Midwest Regionals set to take place on November 9 in Romeoville, Illinois.
