The Northern Michigan University women's wrestling team achieved a significant victory at the Alma Open on Saturday. Competing against eight other teams, NMU secured first place, with standout performances from wrestlers Zhivanna Magdaleno and Alissa Caltagirone.
Magdaleno excelled in the 123-pound weight class, finishing with a flawless 5-0 record. Her victories included two by fall, two by technical fall, and one by forfeit. In the 143-pound category, Caltagirone also took first place after defeating her teammate Marisa Angelos in the championship match.
In addition to these wins, Abigale Swanson placed second in the 170-pound class with a 3-2 record. Sharon Leon and Samantha Chaon both competed in the 130-pound category; Leon finished second with a 1-1 record while Chaon secured third place.
Mickaela Keane ended fourth in the 170-pound division after winning three out of five matches. Trinity Valentin also earned fourth place in the 109-pound category with two victories.
Overall, NMU accumulated 173 points to surpass Michigan Revolution's 131 points and Tiffin's 114 points. The Wildcats recorded nine pins as a team during the event.
Looking ahead, NMU will participate in the Grand View Open on February 3rd in Des Moines, Iowa.
