Northern Michigan wrestlers to compete at Alma Open

The Northern Michigan University wrestling team is set to participate in the Alma Open this weekend. The event will take place at the Art Smith Arena in Alma, Michigan, beginning at 9 a.m. Eastern Time.

In a previous encounter this season, the Wildcats secured a victory against the Alma Scots with a score of 38-5. Notable performances included Trinity Valentin's win by fall in the 109 class at 2:02 and Samatha Chaon's victory by fall in the 130 class at 1:05. Sharon Leon also won by fall in the 136 bracket at 2:23. Additionally, Noelle Gaffney (155), Abigale Swanson (170), and Mickaela Keane (191) achieved wins by technical fall.

The Wildcats hold notable rankings, being placed 10th according to The Open Mat NCAA Women's Wrestling Rankings and tied for 15th in the National Women's Coaches Association rankings. Individual athletes have also received recognition: Marisa Angelos is ranked 7th nationally in the 143 weight class by The Open Mat; Noelle Gaffney holds a similar ranking in the 155 weight class according to both NWCA and The Open Mat; Alissa Caltagirone is ranked 7th by The Open Mat and 8th by NWCA in the same category; Abigale Swanson stands at rank 13th in the 170 weight class per The Open Mat.

Previously, Northern Michigan competed at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championship hosted by Northwestern University in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. They finished seventh out of fifteen teams. Noteworthy performances included Noelle Gaffney's second-place finish in the 155 weight class, earning her team 16 points, and Alissa Caltagirone's third-place finish in the 143 weight class with a contribution of 17 points.
