NMU sports teams compete across multiple events from September 30 to October 6

Northern Michigan University (NMU) athletics teams had a busy week with various sports competing from September 30 to October 6, 2024.

In men's golf, Arthur Ylitalo achieved a third-place finish at the Motor City Shakedown, earning All-Tournament Team recognition with a two-day total of 143 (-1). His performance matched Austin Elsner's round of 143, placing him sixth in NMU's record book for individual 36-hole scores. Eric Yun also performed well, finishing seventh with a two-day total of 145 (+1), marking his fifth career top-10 finish.

The volleyball team secured victories against Saginaw Valley and Lake Superior State University (LSSU), winning both matches 3-1. Meghan Meyer and Allie Barlow each recorded five aces against Saginaw Valley. Jacqueline Smith set a new program record as NMU's all-time kills leader during the match against LSSU, achieving 22 kills.

Women's soccer continued their strong home performance with wins over Ferris State and Saginaw Valley. Captain Brooke Pietila became the program leader in career assists with her contributions against Ferris State. Justina L'Esperance had notable performances in both matches, contributing goals and assists.

The women's swim and dive team defeated St. Cloud twice, with Kalina Ceglinski achieving an NCAA Provisional Qualifying Score in the 1-meter diving event on October 5.

In Greco-Roman wrestling, NMU/NTS claimed victory over Dubuque RTC/Int'll All-Stars with a score of 26-19. Notable performances included Kenny Crosby's technical fall win at 55 kg and Jayden Tadeo-Gosal's victory at 97 kg.

Men's soccer faced losses against St. Cloud and Roosevelt despite outshooting their opponents in both matches. The team battled challenging weather conditions during the game against Roosevelt.

The men's swim and dive team suffered defeats to St. Cloud but saw standout performances from Wyatt Dickman and Gabriel Fulconi across various events.

In football, NMU lost to Saginaw Valley with Michael Love leading in receiving yards for the second consecutive game and Mitch Larkin leading in tackles.

Lastly, NMU hockey experienced a narrow exhibition loss to Michigan Tech, where Colby Browne, Nicolas Ardanaz, and Jakub Altrichter scored for the Wildcats.
