The state of Michigan has announced a schedule for increasing the minimum wage rate, effective from January 1, 2025. The current minimum hourly wage will rise from $10.33 to $10.56 per hour. For minors under 18, who receive 85% of the standard rate, the wage will increase from $8.78 to $8.98 per hour. Tipped employees will see their hourly pay go up from $3.93 to $4.01 per hour.
The training wage remains unchanged at $4.25 per hour for newly hired employees under the age of 20 during their first 90 calendar days of employment.
From February 21, 2025, further adjustments are planned:
- The general minimum hourly wage will be set at $12.48.
- Tipped employees' base pay will be adjusted to $5.99 with an average reported tips requirement of $6.49.
- The rate for minors under 18 will increase slightly to $10.61.
Subsequent increases are scheduled annually through February 21, 2028:
- In February 2026, the minimum wage will rise to $13.29.
- By February 2027, it is expected to reach $14.16.
- By February 2028, it should climb to $14.97.
Additionally, beginning in October each year starting in 2028, the state treasurer will calculate an adjusted minimum wage based on inflation rates which becomes effective on February 21 of the following year.
For tipped employees specifically:
- Their wages as a percentage of the general minimum hourly rate are set to increase progressively each year until they reach parity by February 2030.
