MPHI is spotlighting Tazia Miah, a Public Health Fellow for the Anti-Oppression Leadership Team (AOLT) Executive Committee/AOLT Partnerships Support. Miah joined MPHI through AOLT’s fellowship program, which aims to develop a diverse professional workforce at the Institute. Fellows assist in administrative tasks, support educational and awareness initiatives, and help operationalize Anti-Oppression (AO) goals. Their contributions are reported as crucial in achieving AOLT’s objectives and supporting MPHI’s internal anti-oppression efforts.

Miah holds a B.S. in International Studies: Global Environment and Health from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and is pursuing her Master of Science in Basic Medical Science at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine. She currently serves as a student assistant with the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI), an organization dedicated to creating more inclusive communities and improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Additionally, she has volunteered for Make Food Not Waste and Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA).

Miah stated that her interest in public health is driven by its emphasis on human connection and diverse communities. "My motivation for public health stems from its impact on our daily lives, the multitude of identities it touches, and its role in shaping history," said Miah. "When collaborating within public health systems, I am inspired by the chance to understand the human connection in our diverse communities."

She emphasized that the fellowship program has facilitated her personal growth while allowing her to collaborate and build authentic relationships. "As an MPHI public health fellow, I support the Anti-Oppression Leadership Team (AOLT) in initiatives to solidify a foundation for internal connectivity and bridge-building," Miah explained.

The AOLT fellowship program was featured in MPHI’s 2023 Annual Report.
