MPHI is spotlighting Lizbeth Blas-Rangel, Public Health Fellow for the Anti-Oppression Leadership Team (AOLT) Affinity Groups and Action Team Support. Blas-Rangel joined the Institute as part of AOLT’s fellowship program, which aims to develop a diverse professional workforce. Fellows assist in administrative tasks, support educational and awareness initiatives, and facilitate the operationalization of Anti-Oppression (AO) goals.
Blas-Rangel holds a B.A. in Psychology and French, with a concentration in Community and Global Health, from Kalamazoo College. During her time at Kalamazoo College, she was involved in civic engagement and volunteering groups. She has volunteered with the Kalamazoo County ID program, served as a GEMS (Girls Empowered and Motivated to Succeed) mentor, and worked with English Language Learners (ELL). Blas-Rangel is committed to giving back to communities and promoting equity.
“Public health’s ability to touch and impact every aspect of a person’s life is what motivates me,” Blas-Rangel shared. “Whether it’s advocating for clean water and sanitation or fighting against inequities in healthcare, public health efforts have a profound and far-reaching impact. Knowing that my work in this field contributes to creating healthier communities drives my dedication in public health.”
Blas-Rangel has witnessed health inequities firsthand, shaping her passion for improving healthcare systems and health equity practices—a perspective she brings to her role in the AOLT fellowship program.
“Though I am new to my role as a fellow for AOLT, I have already felt a sense of belonging,” said Blas-Rangel. “Since starting my role, I’ve made it a priority to truly connect with my team and engage in open and honest conversations. By sharing my own experiences and perspectives, as well as actively listening to my team, I have felt a sense of community and have started to build meaningful relationships.”
The AOLT fellowship program was highlighted in MPHI’s 2023 Annual Report.
