SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Maya Hunter concluded her participation in the 108th Michigan Women's Amateur Championship at Plum Hollow Country Club, earning stroke play medalist honors and reaching the quarterfinals in match play after defeating the defending amateur champion.
Hunter began the tournament with an opening round score of 77 (+7) on June 10, followed by a round two score of 68 (-2) on June 11, which was the only under-par round during stroke play. She finished tied for first place in stroke play with Elayna Bowser (75,70), the 2019 Michigan Amateur Champion, both having a total score of 145.
"Maya has shown consistent improvement over the years and this validates how good she can get," said head golf coach Eric Johnson. "The sky is the limit for her golfing success moving forward."
Hunter, a two-time all-conference first-team golfer, aimed to make the cut and enter match play after missing out last year.
"I wasn't trying to do anything special, just hit the shots," she said. "I was a little nervous coming into this morning because I didn't play as well as I wanted to yesterday, but I was telling myself I'm grateful to be out here, and it's a great day to play golf."
Thirty-two golfers advanced to match play on June 12. Hunter defeated Brooke Morris 2 up in the first round and then overcame reigning GAM Women's Champion Bridget Boczar 3 & 2 to reach the quarterfinals. However, she was defeated by Macie Elzinga in the round of eight by a match score of 5 & 4.
The final-four semifinals conclude today. Further details about the Michigan Women's Amateur Championship are available online.
