Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is re-issuing her alert, Tax Scams Targeting Small and Midsized Businesses, emphasizing the need for small business owners to be vigilant against tax scams. Nessel stated, “Criminals who perpetrate tax scams against small and midsized businesses are not only defrauding hardworking entrepreneurs but also undermining the integrity of our tax system for financial gain.”

The AG outlined various tax-related scams that target small and midsized businesses, which include Business-Related W-2 Scams, Employer ID Number Scams, and IRS Imposter Scams. Nessel urged companies to review their data-sharing policies and be cautious of fraudulent websites when applying for Employer Identification Numbers.

To combat these scams, the AG recommended that businesses establish security protocols and train employees to identify scams and government imposters. In case of falling victim to an IRS scam, businesses were advised to report the incident to the appropriate authorities promptly.

Furthermore, the AG has initiated a Business Identity Theft program and conducts educational presentations across the state to raise awareness about identity theft targeting small businesses. Small business owners were encouraged to reach out to the Department for information on upcoming presentations or to request educational materials for their organizations.

To report scams or for additional information, businesses were directed to contact the Consumer Protection Team through various channels provided by the Department. Nessel reiterated that protecting Michigan residents from fraudulent activities remains a top priority for her office.
