Michigan State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice recently announced that eleven Michigan public schools have been honored with National Blue Ribbon School status by the U.S. Department of Education. This prestigious recognition acknowledges the exceptional academic performance and efforts of these schools in addressing achievement disparities among student groups. The recognized schools are located across Michigan, showcasing their dedication to excellence in education.
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, now in its 40th year, honors schools that demonstrate effective and innovative teaching, high standards, and a commitment to serving diverse student populations. Since its inception in 1983, the program has recognized over 9,700 schools with approximately 10,000 awards. The awardees for this year will be celebrated at the 2023 National Blue Ribbon Schools Awards Ceremony in Washington D.C. on Nov. 16-17.
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona commended the 353 schools, including the 11 Michigan schools, named as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2023. These schools are seen as models for effective and innovative educational practices nationwide. Secretary Cardona praised their commitment to academic excellence and their efforts in creating inclusive and supportive learning environments for students from diverse backgrounds.
The Michigan schools that have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools include Byron Center – Cross Creek Charter Academy and Cross Creek Charter Academy, Caledonia Elementary School, Gallimore Elementary School, Dorr Elementary School, Myers Elementary School, Robinson Elementary School, Houghton Elementary School, Norway Elementary School, Pewamo-Westphalia Elementary School, Roosevelt Elementary School, and Schroeder Elementary School. These schools have demonstrated outstanding achievements and serve as shining examples of educational excellence in Michigan.
Dr. Michael Rice emphasized that these accolades are proof that positive things are happening in schools across Michigan, from the Upper Peninsula to the Lower Peninsula. These schools' dedication to academic excellence and their efforts in addressing achievement disparities are commendable.
