Congratulations to Nicole Spencer and Colleen Zammit for being nominated in the 2022 General Elections to the Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education.
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Nicole Spencer and Colleen Zammit for winning their respective seats on the Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education,” BPS Superintendent Embekka Roberson said. “I look forward to working with you both as we continue supporting, shaping and strengthening BPS, its students and the Birmingham community.”
Meet the new Board members:
Nicole Spencer
Spencer has been an educator for the last twenty years, ranging from School Library Media Specialist to Elementary Teacher and Preschool Teacher. Currently, Spencer works as a second-year building substitute at Beverly Elementary and a volunteer in the District. Spencer holds a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from Wayne State University.
“I spent the majority of my career working as a school library media specialist, which developed my leadership skills and enhanced my knowledge in collaboration, innovation, problem solving, and budgeting. This skill set will serve me well as a member of the board,” states Spencer. “This fall, I will begin my second year as a building substitute at Beverly Elementary. This position gives me direct insight to the successes and challenges both students and teachers are currently facing. I am certain this will continue to provide me with valuable perspective as a board member."
Spencer and her husband, Christian, live in Beverly Hills and have one child who attends school within the District.
Colleen Zammit
Zammit has been an active participant in the school district, volunteering in classrooms and various events. She is also active within the community, serving as co-chair of the swim team at Beverly Hills Athletic Club for two years and a Catechist at her parish. Zammit graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.S. in Environmental Policy and Behavior.
For the past two years, Zammit has attended almost every Board meeting and study session, participated in the listening sessions for the District budget, and shared her thoughts on how to actively engage parents in district operations. “I’ve attended superintendent selection meetings, been an active participant on the advisory committee for our 5-year strategic plan development, and participated in meetings and reviews regarding our K-8 math curriculum update,” said Zammit. “If elected I will always remember that I represent and serve the taxpayers in our district, and work to uphold parental rights in education (while recognizing a corresponding need for parental responsibilities), ensure BPS chooses proven, rigorous curricula so that all our students can reach their highest level of academic success, and run the district in a fiscally responsible manner. ”
Zammit and her husband, Chris, have lived in Beverly Hills since 2009 with their three children. Her husband, Chris, graduated from Groves High School.
