Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently announced that significant road repair projects around the state are scheduled to start in early May, according to a press release Executive Office of the Governor.
The projects will involve bridge construction and road resurfacing throughout several counties in the state.
According to the press release, economic modeling suggests that these projects will, directly and indirectly, sustain approximately 655 jobs.
One of the resurfacing projects is in Marshall, where the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will spend $279,000 to resurface one mile of the I-94 Business Loop on Michigan Avenue between Kalamazoo Avenue and Partello Road.
The goal of this project is to enhance driver safety and ride quality while also extending the longevity of the road.
MDOT and the City of Houghton will also spend approximately $9.6 million on the reconstruction of 1.1 miles of US-41 in Houghton.
Work on this project started in 2021 but was put on hold for the winter; however, it is scheduled to be finished by fall.
Work this year will involve expanding College Avenue to include a center left-turn lane, improving storm sewers, and replacing municipal sanitary sewage and water mains.
Work began in 2021, was suspended for the winter, and is expected to be completed this fall. The investment is expected to support 114 jobs.
MDOT is also investing $4 million to resurface 2.9 miles of M-37 from M-96 and Creekview Drive, $1.3 million to resurface 3.7 miles of M-66 in Antrim and Charlevoix counties from north of Old State Road to south of M-32, and $758,000 to resurface 3.8 miles of M-83 from M-54 and Townline Road.
Additionally, MDOT plans to detour northbound I-75 in order to facilitate the removal of a bridge beam at the Lincoln Road overpass.
The planned operation is part of a $37 million project that will resurface 6.4 miles of US-23 in Standish from I-75 to Grove Street.
The project also includes repairs to 19 bridges.
The funding for this project comes from Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan initiative, which seeks to reconstruct the state's essential roadways and bridges.
The investment approach prioritizes modifications that extend the life and improve the quality of state infrastructure.
