Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's More for MI Money Plan hopes to help motorists, seniors and families save more money in the form of relief from several taxes.
The plan, which Whitmer announced during her 2022 State of the State address, proposes to eradicate the retirement tax for seniors, along with tripling the tax credit for working families and pausing Michigan's sales tax on gas, a recent press release from the governor's office said.
"These are tough times, and Michiganders need relief," Whitmer said in the release. "I'm ready to work across the aisle with the legislature to negotiate a bipartisan solution that cuts taxes and lowers costs for drivers, seniors and working families.
We can start by pausing the sales tax on fuel. A short-term pause is a fiscally-responsible action we can take that will provide drivers relief at the pump right now—not next year—while also protecting funding for road repairs and saving tens of thousands of good-paying construction jobs. While I am open to negotiating on alternative proposals, I will not support legislation that jeopardizes road repairs, construction jobs or funding for local schools."
Whitmer knows that reducing gas prices is a short-term solution, she said in the release. Her administration is also working to deliver $400 refund checks to eligible motorists and pushing to pass a budget that repeals the retirement tax and triples a tax credit for more than 700,000 working families. She noted that those tax cuts would provide a boost to over 1.2 million Michigan families over time and put thousands of dollars back in their pockets to help deal with price increases.
Over the past two years, Michigan has had its best economic recovery ever, a recent Bloomberg report said.
"I look forward to meeting with Republican and Democratic leaders next week to negotiate on our shared priorities," Whitmer said in the release. "I'll work with anyone to help Michiganders get more for their money. Let's get this done."
