Clinton County Michigan Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on Mar 17.
We have been notified by residents within the county that they have been contacted by someone posing as law enforcement who is telling them that they owe money for fines to the Sheriff's Office.
The SCAMMER then directs the person to purchase certain types of pre-paid cards and give them the information over the phone to pay their fines. This is 1000% a scam. NOONE with any sort of legitimate business or governmental agency will ever ask you to pay a bill or fine with prepaid gift cards.
This is clue #1 that this is a scam. If you ever have any questions about someone calling you and trying to scam you out of money, hang up and find a phone number on your own for the business or governmental agency claiming that you owe them money.
DO NOT call a number provided by the scammer. If you are still unsure, contact your local law enforcement agency so that they may help you.
