Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Commission to Recognize Local Preservation Work

City of Kalamazoo issued the following announcement on Feb 16.

The Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is currently accepting nominations for the 2022 Historic Preservation Awards of Merit. The awards recognize individuals, institutions, and projects that sustain our community’s character through an outstanding commitment to historic preservation.

Nomination packets are available here (384 KB) . Completed nominations can be submitted to Luis Pena, the City of Kalamazoo’s Historic Preservation Coordinator, by mail to 245 North Rose, Ste 100, Kalamazoo, MI 49007 or by email to penal@kalamazoocity.org. Nominations must be submitted by Monday, March 28, 2022 at 5:00 p.m.

Nominate a project, person, or group for an Award of Merit

The Historic Preservation Commission will present awards at a ceremony during National Preservation Month in May 2022.

Community members can submit as many separate nominations as they wish in the following categories:

  • Individuals or Institutions
  • Residential Property Projects
  • Commercial, Institutional, or Government Property Projects
  • Mixed Use (Commercial and Residential or others) Property Projects
  • Interior Rehabilitation
  • Infill or New Construction
  • Innovative Solutions in Preservation
  • Archaeology
To be eligible for nomination, projects must be in the City of Kalamazoo and have been completed within the past five years, with the work substantially completed by March 14, 2022. Rehabilitation projects should comply with the Secretary of the Interior Standards. The Commission is especially seeking projects outside the currently designated historic districts.
