UIA waives penalties and interest for late wage reports if filed by May 31

The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency announced on May 1 that it will grant a one-time waiver of penalties and interest for employers who missed the First Quarter 2026 deadline to file wage reports and make payments, provided they complete these requirements by May 31.

This temporary measure is intended to help employers and third-party administrators adjust to MiUI, the agency’s new user platform launched in late February. The original filing deadline was April 27. According to the agency, this extension gives additional time for users to become familiar with new procedures for submitting reports, activating accounts, and making payments.

“State law gives UIA the option to waive penalty and interest when employers file late wage reports if there is a good reason to do so,” said Jason Palmer, UIA Director. “UIA is providing employers with additional time to become familiar with a new system and a new process, and it is the right thing to do, similar to waivers the agency has granted to qualifying claimants who are overpaid benefits.”

Employers must now use MiUI instead of the previous Michigan Web Account Manager system for tax-related unemployment insurance tasks. In MiUI, each employer must activate their own account even if they designate a third-party administrator. Resources such as training guides, videos, FAQs, job aids, and tools are available through MiUI University online.

The benefits phase of MiUI is scheduled for launch this summer. Employers seeking assistance can contact the Office of Employer Ombudsman or access further information through online resources such as FAQ pages or chatbots.
