The Michigan Department of Transportation announced on May 4 that the traffic signal at the intersection of M-26 and Canal Road in Houghton will be switched from flash mode to full operation starting Monday, May 11.

The new traffic signal will display green, amber, and red lights for all directions beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday. The department is urging drivers to pay attention to these changes and use caution when approaching the intersection.

MDOT said it has been monitoring this intersection for several years. Traffic counts indicate that a traffic signal is now necessary during the peak summer season. The department plans to operate the new signal from approximately May until October each year, returning it to flash mode during winter months. MDOT noted that the schedule for seasonal operation may change depending on traffic volumes and weather conditions.

According to the official website, the Michigan Department of Transportation manages nearly 10,000 miles of state highways, more than 4,800 bridges, over 2,700 miles of non-motorized trails, and various other transportation infrastructure across Michigan. The department also employs more than 2,800 people and operates seven regions with numerous service centers statewide.

MDOT’s mission focuses on serving and linking people, communities, and the economy through transportation efforts. Leadership includes a director as well as key executives such as chief administrative officer and chief operations officer according to its official website.

MDOT maintains state highway systems including M routes (like M-26), I routes (interstates), US routes, along with bridge upkeep, rail services oversight, public transit programs management, aviation initiatives support, non-motorized trail maintenance efforts—and sets safety standards statewide.
