Congress has voted to end the federal government shutdown, which lasted 43 days and is now the longest in U.S. history. The House approved the Senate’s funding deal with a 222–209 vote after the Senate passed it earlier in the week. This agreement will keep government operations running until January 30, 2026.

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce worked with Michigan’s Congressional delegation to highlight the importance of ending the shutdown. The organization also publicly called for lawmakers from both parties to reach an agreement.

"The Michigan Chamber worked with the Michigan Congressional delegation to vocalize the importance of keeping the government open, and called publicly for lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to come together on a deal," according to a statement from the Chamber.

Reports since the start of the shutdown have noted its negative effects on small businesses, national security, and overall economic activity. In Michigan, estimates indicated that each month of closure resulted in approximately $1.6 billion in lost state gross product.

While funding is now secured through late January, it may take time before all government services and payments are fully restored. Additionally, there is still no resolution regarding Affordable Care Act tax credits; if this issue remains unresolved by January's end, another possible government shutdown could occur.
