The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking updated feedback from the public on traffic flow and pedestrian safety issues along US-31 in downtown Charlevoix. The department has opened an online survey for community members to share their concerns and suggestions, which will remain available until January 1, 2026.

In recent years, MDOT has implemented several changes in the area, such as adding a center left-turn lane, upgrading signals and crosswalks, and improving the bascule bridge to enhance safety and reliability. However, the agency continues to look for ways to address ongoing issues.

A pedestrian safety study conducted in Charlevoix in 2021 collected input from residents about various challenges. Concerns highlighted included poor visibility at mid-block crossings, conflicts between drivers and pedestrians or tourists and locals, inattentive pedestrians, drivers failing to yield, frustration caused by delays at the bascule bridge, jaywalking incidents, and near misses.

MDOT is now gathering additional comments to better understand any recent developments or new concerns from the community. According to the department: "As the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) continues to develop plans to help smooth traffic flow, reduce delays, and improve pedestrian safety on US-31 through downtown Charlevoix, it is soliciting updated input from community members to help guide that process."

A public meeting is planned for early 2026 where MDOT will present draft plans for further improvements in Charlevoix.
