Crews from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will conduct routine inspections on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, which connects Houghton and Hancock, starting Monday, October 20. The work will require intermittent single-lane closures on the bridge through Friday, October 24. According to MDOT, at least one lane will remain open in each direction at all times.
During the nights of October 20 through 22, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., the bridge will not lift for vessels while inspections are in progress. The bridge will be set at an intermediate position to allow boats that do not need a full opening to pass underneath.
The inspections were originally scheduled for earlier in the month but were postponed. MDOT stated, "These inspections will help ensure continued safe and reliable operation of the bridge."
The Portage Lake Lift Bridge is a key transportation link for the area. Routine inspections are part of ongoing efforts by MDOT to maintain infrastructure and safety for both motorists and waterway users.
