The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that the second year of a three-year project to replace the US-131 bridges over KL Avenue and the Amtrak railroad in Kalamazoo is nearing completion. The $24 million investment is scheduled to finish its current phase by late November, with the overall project expected to be completed in June 2026.
MDOT, working with Davis Construction, Inc., will shift US-131 traffic onto the new bridges over KL Avenue and the Amtrak rail by Thursday evening. To facilitate this transition, southbound US-131 will experience single-lane closures from 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 15, through 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 16. After the shift, crews will begin removing temporary lanes and bridges.
KL Avenue will remain closed under US-131 throughout the winter and is expected to reopen in late summer 2026. Next year’s work on KL Avenue will include rebuilding the road, sanitary sewer, culverts, and adding a nonmotorized path.
According to MDOT, economic modeling suggests this project will directly and indirectly support 341 jobs.
