The Northern Michigan University Women's soccer team lost 1-0 to the Michigan Tech Huskies in Marquette. Despite outshooting their rivals 23-7 and earning 10 corner kicks, the Wildcats were unable to score.
Head coach Erin Egolf commented after the match, "I thought we created enough [chances], but we weren't good enough in front of goal. We didn't have anyone take responsibility today for putting the ball in the back of the net… We were in their half for most of the game, and we didn't get it done."
With seven games left in the regular season and only two at home, Egolf emphasized that it will come down to individual players stepping up. "We're not talking about freshmen, we're talking about juniors and seniors who we know can produce, and we are putting them in situations to produce, [but] it's not happening. They have to find a way."
Michigan Tech's Olivia Gette scored the only goal with a free kick from just inside NMU's half that went untouched into the top right corner. This was only the third time Michigan Tech has led against Northern Michigan in six years. Husky goalkeeper Bri Barrows made five saves for her first shutout of the season.
The defeat ended an eight-game unbeaten streak for NMU against Michigan Tech and marked their first home loss to the Huskies since August 30, 2018.
Northern Michigan now faces four consecutive road games starting next weekend against Davenport and Grand Valley State.
