The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that routine maintenance will take place on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock on Thursday, October 16. The work will involve greasing the bridge cables, which requires several lifts of the bridge.
The scheduled maintenance is set to begin after midnight and should be completed by 6 a.m. During this time, each lift could last up to 30 minutes. The closures will impact vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. MDOT has noted that this schedule depends on weather conditions and may change if necessary.
According to MDOT, "This work will help ensure continued safe and reliable operation of the bridge."
The Portage Lake Lift Bridge is an important connection between Houghton and Hancock, and regular maintenance is part of efforts to maintain its safety and reliability.
