Crews from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will conduct routine inspections on the Portage Lake Lift Bridge connecting Houghton and Hancock starting Monday, October 6. The work is scheduled to continue through Friday, October 10, and will require intermittent single-lane closures. MDOT stated that at least one lane in each direction will remain open throughout the inspection period.
Additionally, from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. nightly between October 6 and October 8, the bridge will not lift for vessels during inspection hours. The bridge will be set at an intermediate position so boats that do not need a full opening can still pass underneath.
According to MDOT, these inspections are necessary to maintain the safe and reliable operation of the bridge.
