Northbound I-75 in Detroit will be closed between Schaefer Road and Clark Avenue Street this weekend for several maintenance projects. The closure begins at 9 p.m. on Friday, October 3, and is scheduled to end at 5 a.m. on Monday, October 6.
During this period, crews will apply a protective surface to four bridges and install an epoxy overlay on the I-75 Rouge River Bridge. These efforts are part of a larger $42 million project that also includes work on the I-75 bridge over M-85 (Fort Street) and ramp bridges. The Michigan Department of Transportation stated that the work requires multiple weekend closures, with this weekend marking the eighth out of sixteen planned.
A detour has been set up directing drivers from northbound I-75 to northbound I-275, then eastbound I-94 and eastbound I-96 before returning to I-75. Local traffic can use M-85 (Fort Street) as an alternate route.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer commented on the broader road improvement initiative: "Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let's build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying, local jobs."
The ongoing project began in late April with overnight closures for pier patching work involving the 230 piers supporting key bridges along this stretch of highway. According to economic modeling from MDOT, the $42 million investment is projected to directly and indirectly support approximately 401 jobs.
