As the deadline for passing a federal budget approaches, Common Cause is urging Senator Peters to oppose President Trump’s proposed budget. The organization argues that the plan favors tax cuts for wealthy individuals while reducing funding for healthcare and essential services.
Suzanne Almeida, Vice President of States at Common Cause, said, “Senator Peters could have stopped the president’s power grabs in the March funding fight, but he chose to back down. Six months later, Trump and his congressional allies have only gotten bolder — putting our lives at stake by gutting healthcare and critical services for working American families just to give his billionaire friends a tax cut. Will Senator Peters fight back for the American people this time or roll over for President Trump’s corrupt, billionaire agenda?”
Common Cause is advocating for Congress to pass a budget that maintains Americans’ access to healthcare by extending enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits set to expire later this year and reversing Medicaid cuts enacted in July. The group also calls for new protections that would prevent any president from threatening government operations and cutting vital services.
The organization warns that if current proposals are adopted, healthcare premiums could increase by up to $4,000 annually for more than 20 million Americans.
A government shutdown will occur if lawmakers do not reach an agreement on a budget by September 30.
