The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that one lane of southbound I-75 at the Fenton Road bridge in Genesee County will remain closed until 2 p.m. on Friday, September 26, to allow for the completion of overpass repairs.
This closure is part of a $2.7 million project aimed at improving and repairing 13 structures across several counties, including Genesee, St. Clair, Arenac, Isabella, and Clare. The work covers highways such as M-33, I-75, US-10, M-54, and I-94. Repairs include concrete substructure patching, resealing bridge joints, realigning steel rocker bearings, steel beam repairs, heat straightening, painting, and installing temporary supports.
"Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying local jobs without raising taxes by a dime. This year, let's build on our momentum to pass a bipartisan local road funding plan so we can keep fixing our damn roads and creating good-paying local jobs."
The affected area is near Flint in Genesee County. The closure began on Monday, September 5th and is scheduled to end by Friday afternoon on September 26th if weather permits. Traffic restrictions include a single-lane closure with a traffic shift for southbound I-75 traffic.
Additionally, the right lane of southbound Fenton Road will also be closed until 5:30 p.m. on September 26th; northbound Fenton Road remains open.
According to economic modeling from MDOT's announcement about the project’s scope and expected benefits across multiple counties in Michigan—this investment is anticipated to support approximately 26 jobs directly or indirectly through its duration.
MDOT stated that these repairs are necessary not only for extending the service life of the affected structures but also for ensuring safety during construction activities by providing secure work areas for both crews and motorists.
