The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will implement lane closures and intermittent total closures on US-23 at the Joy Road bridge in Ann Arbor beginning Friday, September 26. The work is scheduled to replace bridge beams after a high-load strike damaged the structure in June 2024.
According to MDOT, one lane in each direction on US-23 will be closed starting at 9 p.m. on Friday and lasting through Sunday, September 28. There will also be periods of total closure for both directions starting at 11:59 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday as crews set new beams. Traffic control during this period will be managed by the Michigan State Police, and drivers are advised to anticipate delays.
“This closure is necessary to provide the safest work area possible for crews and motorists,” MDOT stated.
The project represents a $41 million investment and is expected to directly and indirectly support approximately 391 jobs based on economic modeling.
US-23 serves as a major route near Ann Arbor, and these repairs follow safety concerns raised after the June incident involving a high-load vehicle striking the Joy Road bridge.
