The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has submitted public comment in support of the Line 5 pipeline and the Great Lakes Tunnel project to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. Line 5 is a pipeline that runs beneath the Straits of Mackinac, transporting light oil and natural gas liquids used for fueling vehicles and heating homes in Michigan.
The proposed tunnel project aims to relocate a segment of Line 5 by burying it deep below the lakebed within a tunnel. This is intended to reduce risks to the Great Lakes from potential spills and protect the pipeline from anchor strikes. The project remains under review as it moves through permitting processes with both state and federal agencies.
“Small businesses are feeling the pressure from rising costs,” said Amanda Fisher, NFIB State Director. “Ensuring the Great Lakes Tunnel project receives the necessary permits to begin construction is an important step to helping our main streets keep costs manageable.”
Fisher added, “After years of review, study, and input from every angle, the case for the tunnel has never been stronger. This is a shovel-ready project with broad public support, meaningful economic benefits, and a private funding source that won’t touch a dime of public money.”
Since permitting began five years ago, more than 40,000 hours have been spent on survey work in the Straits area. State and federal agencies have worked with industry partners on plans designed to limit environmental impact during construction as well as after completion.
A decision on permits will be made by DEGLE following its public hearing session. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to release its final environmental impact statement and make a permitting decision later this year.
