Event celebrates Michigan’s disability community
LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council (MiDDC) and Self-Advocates of Michigan (SAM) are organizing the second annual Breaking Barriers Day. This event, aimed at celebrating the experiences of people with developmental disabilities, is open to the public and will occur on Tuesday, July 29 in downtown Lansing.
Breaking Barriers Day aligns with the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It acknowledges progress made since its enactment while emphasizing ongoing efforts needed to create inclusive communities for individuals with disabilities.
"Without intentional inclusion, people with developmental disabilities are too often left out of spaces where people live, work and play," said Dr. Yasmina Bouraoui, MiDDC executive director. "Breaking Barriers Day is a reminder of what is possible when we prioritize connection, creativity and community to create a Michigan where everyone belongs and no one is left behind.”
The day's activities include:
- Connection on the Capitol Lawn from 2 – 4 p.m.: Speakers will address issues affecting people with disabilities, highlighting services provided by attending organizations.
- Lansing Shuffle Art Exhibit from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.: Participants can walk or roll from the State Capitol to explore an art exhibit showcasing artists with developmental disabilities. Attendees can engage with artists to understand how disability intersects with art as self-expression.
- Community celebration at Jackson Field at 7 p.m.: The Lansing Lugnuts will host a sensory-friendly night at Jackson Field in collaboration with Disability Rights Michigan. This event aims to provide an accessible environment for fans of all abilities.
Breaking Barriers Day invites everyone, including those new to or familiar with the disability community, to join this free celebration fostering inclusivity.
