Aric Nesbitt, a Michigan State Senator, has raised concerns about state officials allegedly withholding evidence in a $20 million theft investigation. He called for clarity regarding the governor's actions in remarks made on X.

"$20 Million taxpayer dollars STOLEN," said Aric Young Nesbitt, State Senator for Michigan. "Whitmer officials attempting to withhold evidence from investigators. Governor signed a letter encouraging Qatari officials to communicate with the alleged thief off the record. It's time for answers."

Michigan is currently under scrutiny following reports of an alleged $20 million theft involving taxpayer funds linked to grants administered by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. This situation has sparked bipartisan concern and prompted official investigations. According to Bridge Michigan, auditors and journalists have uncovered questionable expenditures and missing documentation, leading both state and federal authorities to launch probes into potential fraud.

According to Bridge Michigan and the Michigan Attorney General, the missing funds involve grants from the Michigan Strategic Fund distributed to nonprofits and private partners. Some recipients reportedly failed to deliver promised services or maintain adequate records. As investigations continue, multiple officials have been placed on leave, though no charges have been filed yet.

The Associated Press reports that this case is among the largest recent public fund frauds in the United States. It is comparable to Mississippi’s $77 million Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) welfare scandal and California’s $11 billion unemployment fraud, highlighting ongoing national challenges with oversight and accountability.

Nesbitt serves as the Senate Minority Leader for Michigan’s 20th District. He previously served three terms in the State House and as Michigan Lottery Commissioner. According to his official biography and Ballotpedia, he is recognized for his work on fiscal oversight, regulatory reform, and state government accountability.
