MPHI and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) have introduced the Michigan Recovery Friendly Workplace (MI RFW) program. This initiative aims to create healthier workplaces by supporting employees recovering from substance use disorder.

The program provides education for leadership and human resources staff on topics such as substance use disorder, stigma, recovery, supportive policies, community resources, and naloxone administration. These educational efforts are intended to improve employee support and reduce unscheduled absences, turnover rates, and costs related to recruitment, training, and healthcare.

Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director, stated: “We believe that everyone deserves a fresh start, and the Michigan Recovery Friendly Workplace program is a testament to our commitment to supporting individuals in recovery. By fostering healthier, more inclusive workplaces, we can help individuals rebuild their lives and contribute positively to Michigan communities.”

In September 2024, Mission Restaurant Group received its designation as a Recovery Friendly Workplace from the program. David Richie, president and CEO of Mission Restaurant Group said: “Becoming a Recovery Friendly Workplace was a natural extension of our commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive, and empowering environment for our team. We recognize the importance of providing resources and fostering understanding for individuals in recovery as they rebuild their lives and careers. Through training and open conversations, our team has grown closer, and we’ve seen firsthand the positive impact of reducing stigma and supporting recovery.”
