Michigan House Republicans have publicly declared their opposition to Representative Ranjeev Puri's stance on a bipartisan school safety bill, which has garnered support from law enforcement. The announcement was made on the social media platform X.

In May 2025, the Michigan House approved a bipartisan package of school safety bills designed to enhance emergency preparedness and mental health support in educational institutions. According to the legislation, schools are required to update their emergency response plans every three years and provide standard safety training for all faculty and staff. This initiative received backing from both political parties and various stakeholders, including parents and educators, highlighting a collaborative effort to improve school safety.

A significant aspect of the legislation is the requirement for the Michigan Office of School Safety to inform district emergency and safety managers about any tips regarding potential threats within 24 hours. Local law enforcement must also be notified within this timeframe. This measure aims to ensure prompt communication and response to potential threats, thereby enhancing the safety of students and staff.

Representative Ranjeev Puri, a Democrat from Canton, introduced a proposal requiring the Michigan State Police to develop standardized terminology for use during school emergencies. A related bill co-sponsored by Representative Stephanie Young mandates that all schools and districts in the state adopt this terminology. Supporters assert that standardized language would minimize confusion during crises, leading to more effective emergency responses.
