At the end of the school year, one of these winners will be chosen for the Educator of the Year award, accompanied by a $10,000 cash prize.
Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli commented on LaMarra’s dedication: “Heather LaMarra’s journey from social work to ESL teaching speaks volumes about her dedication to empowering children.” She highlighted LaMarra's focus on multilingual learners and her passion for creating a welcoming learning environment.
LaMarra shared that her transition into education was inspired by her previous work as a social worker and her desire for a rewarding career change. She emphasized the unique relationships she forms with students through ongoing teaching interactions.
Nominated by a family member, LaMarra was praised for making students feel comfortable and engaging them effectively despite language barriers. Her commitment to professional development and lifelong learning was also noted.
LaMarra holds degrees from Michigan State University, Nova Southeastern University, and the University of Phoenix. With 22 years in education, she has spent the last decade in her current role.
The Excellence in Education award evaluates nominees based on criteria such as excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in advancing educational achievements within their schools or districts.
