Northern Michigan University's athletic teams had a busy week from April 7-13, with notable performances across several sports.
On Monday, April 7, the women's golf team participated in the NC4K Classic and finished 16th with a +93 score after the first 27 holes of the 36-hole tournament. Golfer Maggie Pietila, Maddy Martens, and Hailey Bolander each had rounds of +19.
The tournament concluded on Tuesday, April 8, with the team improving to 13th place at +126. Maddy Martens posted the top 36-hole score for NMU, finishing 42nd overall at +24, followed by Maggie Pietila in 48th place with +26, and Hailey Bolander in 55th with +29.
Jonathan Gurule shone in Greco-Roman wrestling on Friday, April 11, by claiming silver in the 63kg category at the U23 Pan-Am Championships. Gurule opened with a 12-1 victory over Marcelo Nahim of Argentina, faced a 2-1 loss to Angel Gabriel of Mexico, then bounced back with two identical 8-4 wins over Sebastian Hernan and Sebastian Bustamante Mejias, both from Chile.
In lacrosse action, NMU faced a challenging match against No. 22/15 Grand Valley, suffering a 4-11 defeat. NMU's early struggles allowed GVSU to build an 8-0 lead by halftime. Josie Lakosky scored twice, while Taylor Priestley and Maddi Bast each added a goal.
Saturday, April 12, saw the NMU football team secure a 20-9 victory over Minnesota Duluth in a modified spring game. Noah Dobert was a standout performer, recording three touchdowns and rushing for 153 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Duke Shovald completed 4-of-8 passes for 63 yards.
The university's track and field team had a successful outing at the Titan Invitational, bagging eight first-place finishes and 11 additional top-three placements. Skylar Grubb (1500m), Claire Waligorski (5000m), Crystal Walker (100m hurdles), Ahna Larson (400m hurdles), Sofi Diop (triple jump), Anya VanSweden (3000m steeplechase), and Wilme Els (javelin) were among the individual winners, with the team also clinching victory in the 4x100m relay.
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday, April 13, with the lacrosse team falling to Davenport 9-11. Josie Lakosky led with six goals, matched her season-high of 14 shots and had 11 shots on target. The Panthers arrested a five-game losing streak to NMU, marking their first win over them since April 22, 2022. Goalkeeper Zoe Cassel made nine saves to match her career high, while senior Theadora Krueger had five caused turnovers, the second-most in her career.
