On April 8, 2025, a teacher from Macomb County was recognized for her dedication to education through the Michigan Lottery's Excellence in Education award. Lumturje Shuti, a lead Latchkey teacher at Pearl Lean Elementary School within the Warren Consolidated Schools district, received the accolade due to her commitment to her students' development.
The Excellence in Education awards were initiated by the Michigan Lottery in 2014 to honor exceptional public-school educators across the state during the academic year. Weekly award winners receive a $2,000 cash prize, and a chance for one of them to be named Educator of the Year, receiving an additional $10,000. Winners are also featured in news segments on various media partner stations, and the segment highlighting Shuti will air tonight.
Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli remarked, "Latchkey teachers aid in promoting students' social, emotional, and intellectual development. Mrs. Shuti is a passionate and dedicated educator whose kindness and warmth leaves an impact on her students and their families. She creates a safe and supportive environment which fosters growth and success in her students both before and after school."
Shuti was drawn to education from a young age, inspired by her fascination with teaching as portrayed on television and in movies. She stated, "My love for children at a young age was a big reason why I wanted to be an educator."
Nominated by a family member, Shuti has been acknowledged for her commitment, often using her resources to provide necessary supplies for her students. Her efforts extend beyond classroom hours, as she frequently remains until the last child is picked up, offering a supportive environment for both students and parents. Her dedication is described as unmatched, highlighting her impact on the school community.
After earning an associate's degree from Macomb Community College, Shuti has dedicated 30 years to education, spending the last five years as a Latchkey teacher.
Award nominees are evaluated based on their excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in promoting educational advancement.
